Last week, Automotive Campus joined the CARMUNICATION conference in Brainport Eindhoven — a gathering that could not have been more timely or relevant. As the Dutch automotive industry moves into one of the most transformative decades in its history, initiatives like CARMUNICATION are vital to help navigate the Automotive Roadmap 2025‑2035, align stakeholders and accelerate collective progress.
The roadmap defines a strategic direction for the Netherlands to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global context — where digitalisation and sustainability are not optional, but foundational pillars for the industry’s future. In this light, the CARMUNICATION conference wasn’t just an event — it was a practical embodiment of the roadmap’s call for cross‑sector collaboration and shared innovation.
What stands out is a shift from traditional automotive engineering to a software‑ and data‑driven ecosystem, with Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), connected services, autonomous technologies and secure digital infrastructure at the core. Across sessions and site visits, the conference made these abstract industry shifts tangible and actionable for the aftermarket — where digital transformation is already changing the rules of engagement.
A highlight of the programme was the opportunity to visit key innovation hubs that exemplify the roadmap’s strategic priorities:
- TNO Mobility Applied Research Quarter at Automotive Campus — where we explored real‑world development of SDVs, autonomous systems, sensor integration and data ecosystems. These developments echo the roadmap’s emphasis on digitalisation as a central pillar for the future of mobility.
- VDL ETS (also at Automotive Campus) — develops and tests electric, autonomous, and connected vehicles, promoting open, standardized data sharing for collaborative mobility innovation.
- NXP at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven — where semiconductor innovation and secure connectivity architectures demonstrated why digital platforms and cybersecurity are now strategic industry enablers.
These visits brought into focus what the roadmap highlights as essential: cross‑sector collaboration. Whether dealing with software ecosystems, digital access frameworks, or future vehicle architectures, no single player can go it alone — and that’s precisely where CARMUNICATION’s value lies. It catalyses conversations, unites diverse perspectives and helps convert vision into shared action — aligning directly with the roadmap’s call for cooperation across automotive, ICT, logistics, energy and materials sectors.
The conference also underscored the importance of independent aftermarket readiness. As vehicles become increasingly software‑centric, access to data, standards and interoperable solutions will determine who can participate in the evolving ecosystem. CARMUNICATION’s focus on accessibility, shared knowledge and supporting associations such as ADPA, CLEPA and FIGIEFA strengthens this ecosystem‑wide readiness.
In a period where strategic direction matters as much as technological innovation, initiatives like CARMUNICATION serve as practical accelerators for the industry’s collective journey toward the goals defined for 2025‑2035. They help translate broad vision into understanding, connection, and coordinated action — which the roadmap clearly identifies as essential for the Dutch automotive sector to thrive in a competitive global landscape.
